Holiday Memories

Holidays are the ultimate memory makers for families.  I think there are a number of reasons. We get to spend quality time with the ones we love.  We have new and exciting experiences.  We get to relax, without the extra pressures of everyday life demanding our attention.

Preserving holiday memories can be a great family experience in itself.  The popularity of digital photography makes it the first choice of many people wanting to capture holiday memories.  It’s also one of the most versatile.  Even the kids can get in on the action with the little fully automatic cameras around now.  Some of our funnest holiday shots have been taken by our 5 year old!

It would be a pity to leave those memories languishing on a memory card or computer though.  There are plenty of options to display your shots.

  • Print them out at home or your favourite photo kiosk and pop them in a photo album
  • Display them in a frame, either traditional or digital
  • Create a scrapbook, again either traditional or digital
  • If you have enough photos, photobooks are fantastic mementos

Scrapbooks are my favourite method for family memories – few main photos and some written words.  They can be as long or short, as simple or extravagant as you like.  Every time you or the kids look at the scrapbook I can guarantee the holiday memories will come flooding back and the banter about your trip will begin.  I also make a photo yearbook each year of the best photos from our trips.

For those not so inclined to carry a camera around, written journals are an option.  Again, the kids can join in with their own journals.  Even the ones that can’t write can draw little (or grand) pictures, accompanied by captions from you.

A wonderful hybrid of scrapbooking and written journals is a map journal from Journey Jottings.

Then there are the ubiquitous souvenirs.  Teaspoons, magnets, stickers, teatowels, snow domes, bobble heads, caps, shirts, postcards … the list is endless.  A collection of souvenirs, although not as personalised, can act as a map of your travels.  And don’t kids just love souvenir shops!
