Fun 4 Kids these school holidays

Fun 4 KidsWinter can be tough for finding things to do with the family.  The beach, while OK for the milder days, is not always ideal.  There’s only so many movies to go to.  Generally, it’s just a bit too chilly and wet for too much in the way of outdoor action.  That’s why I always get excited when I see that Fun 4 Kids is coming up.

In the first week of Victoria’s June/July school holidays (June 27 to July 4) the centre of Warrnambool (in Victoria’s south west) will be transformed into kid heaven.  Now, Warrnambool is a popular summer destination for many families.  However, it’s probably not one that jumps to mind when planning a winter outing.  Don’t let the south west’s weather deter you – Fun 4 Kids is undercover.   All 2.5 acres of it.

I love that the one admission charge is all there is to pay.  Everything within the Fun 4 Kids walls is free.  The organisers say that the event caters for 2-12 year olds, and running my eye over this year’s program I tend to agree.  There are performances from the likes of Jay Laga’aia, International Mini Bike Stunt Team and The Kazoos.  Other activities include sword fighting (yikes!), rock climbing and craft workshops.  In fact, there’s so much to see and do the organisers offer an 8 day family pass.  Note that not everything is on everyday, so check the program for your favourites.

Fun 4 Kids has won a swag of awards including the “Best Community Event in Australia” (2009 Event Awards).  Now in it’s 12th year the festival has certainly met its aim.

“…the Fun4Kids Festival was conceived with the aim of celebrating the imagination and creative spirit of all children”

Warrnambool is around 3 hours drive or train ride from Melbourne (there’s a daily VLine service, too).  There are shuttles from the train station, a park and ride shuttle and a city loop.  Plenty of accommodation options are available ranging from camping sites to serviced apartments for those wanting an extended stay.
