A little while ago we had a free weekend and were searching for somewhere close to home to spend a few nights.  We’re blessed with the Great Ocean Road and Bellarine Peninsula right on our doorstep, but were looking for something different from our usual getaways.  And so, we happened upon the Otways Tourist Park.

It’s hard to believe that two such beautiful, but contrasting areas of natural beauty can be found side by side.  That’s what we have here in Victoria with the coastline of the Great Ocean Road and the equally Great Otway National Park.  Lucky, huh?

A lot of people miss the Great Otway National Park though. Read more

Buchan Caves

A wonderful experience for kids and adults alike, the Buchan Caves are one of Gippsland’s must see attractions.  The amazing stalactites and stalagmites within the caves have developed over thousands of years.  Their almost fairytale like appearance has earned them names like the “Fairy Cave” and “Royal Cave”.

The Buchan Caves are about an hour north of Bairnsdale; a beautiful drive through rolling hills to Bruthen and then bush along Buchan Road. Read more

7 family friendly Warrnambool attractions

Warrnambool, on Victoria’s south west coast, plays host to Fun 4 Kids later in June.  I’m pretty certain families attending the festival as a day trip, will be too exhausted after all the fun to explore many of Warrnambool’s attractions.  However, those opting for a longer stay will find there’s plenty more to see.

Of course, Fun 4 Kids isn’t the only reason to visit and if you find yourself there at another time, as many holidaying families do, I hope this list of my favourite family friendly Warrnambool attractions comes in handy.

in Destinations, Victoria

Why does our family, and hundreds like ours, hook up the caravan and make the journey to Port Fairy each summer? Quite simply: the kids love it. As they say, “If mamma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”. Well, if the kids aren’t happy chances are they’re driving mamma bonkers.

Port Fairy's wharf area is home to a busy recreational and fishing fleet

You’ve probably heard Port Fairy, on Victoria’s south-west coast, being described as quaint, romantic and a foodie’s paradise. It is all those things. Over summer, it’s also a hive of family fun. I’m not talking about whizz bang, hi-tech or even expensive entertainment. Most of it’s free or very low cost. In fact, most of it is exactly the same stuff I did when my parents holidayed in Port Fairy.
